There are innumerable women and individuals within our communities with prophetic lineage, who due to noble traits, ask not for assistance and are hence neglected. The only permitted form of financial support eligible is khums.

We attribute this specific noble trait to the Fatimi Gene; a biologically inherited DNA trait tracing its origins to the noble character of Sayyeda Fatima (AS). These women and individuals face extreme trials, yet display tremendous courage and faith.

WHAT IS THE MEANING OF KHUMS?

In Islam, khums (خُمْس‎) refers to the required religious obligation of any Muslims to pay one-fifth of their acquired wealth from certain sources toward specified causes.

After the passing of the Prophet Muhammad (S), khums was generally paid to the Caliph, who would distribute it to the orphans, the needy, travelers, and the descendants of the Prophet or spend it for the good of the public.

Scholars of the four Sunni Schools of fiqh — Hanafi, Maliki, Shafi‘i, and Hanbali along with the Ja'fri School — have historically considered khums’ 20% tax to be applicable on ghanayem (property, movable and immovable) booty seized in any raid or as a result of actual warfare, as well as buried treasure or resources extracted from land, sea, or mines.

Khums is applied to the business profit, or surplus, of a business income. It is payable at the beginning of the financial year, though this is regarded as being the time at which the amount becomes clear. Ghanima and one-fifth tax of khums apply wherever gain or profit is involved. In the 13th century, it was a practice of the followers of the school of Ahl al Bayt to divide khums into two portions. One portion went to the descendants of Prophet Muhammad (S), and the other portion was divided equally with one part given to the Imam and clergy, while the other part went to the orphaned and poor Muslims.
